Borders Books Honors Teachers Nationwide During Educator Savings Week Sept. 26 – Oct. 2
This week is Educator Savings Week at Borders Bookstores, according to a statement released on PR Newswire. Borders will honor teachers with special savings and events from Sept. 26 through Oct. 2 at all Borders, Borders Insist and Waldenbooks stores across the country. During this week, Borders will recognize teachers of all types, including public school teachers, librarians, college professors, homeschoolers and business educators, for their commitment to life-long learning. Fresh and retired educators will receive a 25 percent discount off regularly priced books, CDs, DVDs, stationery, and other items for either classroom or personal use.
As a way of further honoring the work teachers perform every day, Borders Group will donate $50,000 to its literacy partner, First Book, one of the country’s leading organizations providing new reading materials to children in need. First Book recently announced that it exceeded its goal of bringing5 million new books back to communities impacted by Hurricanes Rita, Katrina and Wilma.
“Because Borders Group understands that many educators acquire materials and resources for their students with money out of their own pockets, we are offering to make these purchases more affordable and provide special, in-store events in honor of their work,” Michael Tam, chief marketing officer for Borders Group, Inc, said in the release. “We are proud to further recognize the impact educators have on children of all ages by benefiting First Book, an organization that shares our passion for books and for increasing literacy rates. Studies prove that on average, there is just one book for every 300 children in low-income neighborhoods compared to an average of 13 books per child in middle-income neighborhoods. We are united with First Book to work toward changing that unacceptable ratio.”
Borders and First Book have partnered for literacy since November 2005 through various programs such as holiday fundraising drives that have taken place in all Borders, Borders Express and Waldenbooks stores across the country. Borders Group’s holiday fundraising effort in 2006 for First Book raised more than $830,000 through customer donations and a corporate gift. First Book is an award-winning non-profit organization that has distributed more than 50 million books to children in low-income families since it was founded in 1992.
“Books and stories bring us moments of discovery, wonderment and joy,” Kyle Zimmer, president of First Book, said in the statement. “Through our work together, Borders has given the power of fresh books and incredible life-changing experiences to thousands of children who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity. We are absolutely delighted to be teamed up with a global retailer whose vision and commitment to education, children and community cannot be overstated.”
In celebration of the Educator Savings Week, special receptions for all educators will be held at Borders stores nationwide Friday, Sept. 28 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Borders Express and Waldenbooks stores will not be hosting special receptions. Educators will be treated to giveaways, raffles and special, in-store events. Educators can learn more about Educator Savings Week at a special section on the Borders website.
